API Scores, Statewide and Similar Schools API Rank

The API (Academic Perfomance Index) is an indicator of school performance. You may view the full parent guide here. API scores are broken down into statewide rank and similar school rank. Before each rank you will find the California State Department of Education description of the term.

Statewide Rank

The California State Department of Education description of Statewide Rank is:

  • This item is for school reports only. On the API Base reports, schools are ranked in ten categories of equal size, called deciles, from one (lowest) to ten (highest). A school's statewide rank compares that school to other schools of the same type in the entire state. The school types are elementary, middle, and high. Each decile contains 10 percent of all schools of that type. A school's statewide rank is the decile where that school's API Base falls compared with the Base APIs of the other schools statewide of the same school type. Special education schools and schools in the ASAM do not receive statewide ranks.

Similar Schools Rank

The California State Department of Education description of Similar Schools Rank is:

  • The similar schools rank indicates the decile rank of a school's API compared with the APIs of 100 other schools with similar demographic characteristics. The similar schools ranks allow schools to look at their academic performance compared to other schools with some of the same opportunities and challenges.

What do the numbers mean? The California State Parents Guide states the following:

9 or 10 = Well-above average for schools with similar characteristics
7 or 8 = Above average for schools with similar characteristics
5 or 6 = About average for schools with similar characteristics
3 or 4 = Below average for schools with similar characteristics
1 or 2 = Well-below average for schools with similar characteristics
